Ada kalanya sebuah web yang diakses begitu lambat kebanyakan dikarenakan data yang perlu diunduh ke halaman browser kita cukup atau bahkan sangat besar, kita ketahui dalam sebuah web tidak serta merta hanya data (dari database) saja, tetapi juga ada file media yang beserta di dalamnya seperti gambar, video, flash, suara, dan lain sebagainya. Apalagi bagi seorang webmaster, file media berupa gambar sangat menentukan bentuk tampilan sebuah web untuk dikatakan menarik atau tidak, di saat tertentu file gambar yang terlalu besar juga kurang bagus karena berimbas pada pemborosan bandwidth baik itu di server maupun pada user client.Dewasa ini, file gambar berformat PNG (Portable Network Graphics) cukup banyak dipakai di kalangan webmaster/web developer dikarenakan transparansi gambar yang memudahkan dalam pengkarakteristikan sebuah web baik berupa logo, background, icon, dan lain-lain. Dengan banyaknya kebutuhan file gambar berformat PNG, maka pengefisiensian file PNG sangat dibutuhkan, dan PNGGauntlet bisa jadi salah satu alternatifnya.
PNGGauntlet adalah aplikasi .NET yang berguna untuk mengoptimalisasi (mengompres) file gambar berformat PNG sehingga bisa menghemat bandwidth di server dan di user client. Selain itu PNGGauntlet juga bisa mengonversi file berformat JPG, GIF, TGA, PCX, dan BMP ke format PNG.

PNG files usually dont take that much space and a compression isnt really necessary as long as photoshop is doing a great job on them
